Calculator Methodology
The GetFFMI calculator estimates lean body mass from weight and body fat percentage, then uses that lean body mass to calculate FFMI and normalized FFMI. The calculator runs in your browser and does not require an account.
Formulas Used
Lean body mass: weight × (1 − body fat percentage / 100)
FFMI: lean body mass in kilograms ÷ height in meters²
Normalized FFMI: FFMI + 6.1 × (1.8 − height in meters)
Important Limitations
FFMI depends heavily on body fat accuracy. If body fat percentage is underestimated, lean body mass and FFMI can look higher than they really are. The calculator is best used for context and progress tracking, not as a medical diagnosis or proof of natural status.
Male and female FFMI ranges are interpreted separately because average lean mass levels differ. A score that is moderate for a man may be very strong for a woman.

Formula Sources
FFMI (Fat-Free Mass Index) became widely known after research comparing fat-free mass levels between natural athletes and anabolic steroid users.
Raw FFMI alone can slightly favor taller or shorter individuals, which is why this calculator also shows normalized FFMI.
The 6.1 adjustment helps normalize scores across different heights so comparisons are more fair.

These formulas are useful for context, but they are not a medical test. The biggest source of error is usually body fat percentage, because lean body mass is estimated from body weight and body fat.
Body Fat Method Limitations
A visual estimate, smart scale, calipers, DEXA scan, and Navy-style estimate can all give different body fat numbers. Even a small difference can change lean body mass and FFMI. For best results, use the same measurement method over time and focus on trends.
If your FFMI looks unusually high or changes suddenly, recheck height, weight, and body fat inputs before drawing conclusions.
