Lean Body Mass in Plain English
If your total body weight is split into two broad buckets, one bucket is fat mass and the other is lean body mass. Lean body mass is the fat-free part of your body.
That means LBM is not the same thing as muscle mass. Muscle is part of lean mass, but so are bones, organs, water, blood, and connective tissue.
What Lean Mass Includes
Muscle
Skeletal muscle is the part lifters usually care about most, but it is not the whole LBM number.
Water and glycogen
Hydration and stored carbohydrate can shift lean mass estimates from day to day.
Bone and organs
These tissues are fat-free, so they are included in lean body mass even though they are not muscle.
Connective tissue
Tendons, ligaments, and other non-fat tissues also contribute to LBM.
Why Body Fat Estimate Matters
Most free LBM calculators estimate lean mass from weight and body fat percentage. If your body fat estimate is too high or too low, your lean mass estimate will move with it.
That is why LBM is best used as a tracking estimate, not as a medical measurement. Use the same body fat method over time and focus on trends.
How LBM Connects to FFMI
FFMI stands for fat-free mass index. It compares lean body mass to height, which makes it more useful for lifters than total body weight alone.
If two people weigh the same but one has much lower body fat, their lean body mass and FFMI may be very different. That is why FFMI starts with LBM rather than scale weight.
